Landscape ecology of terrestrial ecosystems; effects of climate change on communities, ecosystems, and disturbance regimes; disturbance dynamics and interactions (especially fire and insects); plant/forest succession; forest ecology and stand dynamics; carbon cycling in forests; invasive species; ecosystem restoration; plant species-site relationships; ecological land classification; cross-discipline collaboration. Current projects include measuring landscape-level carbon cycling field work in Yellowstone, and examining aspen decline across the northern Front Range of Colorado.
