Research Interest:
(1) Mathematical modeling of human/ecosystem interactions
(2) Spatial Modeling of Land Use/Land Cover Change
(3) The Role of Agroforestry in Biodiversity Conservation
My current research project is the Sanak Island Biocomplexity
Project which is an NSF-funded multi-disciplinary study of human
habitation and ecosystem dynamics on Sanak Island, Alaska. Sanak
Island in the Aleutian Islands was inhabited by humans up until
the late 20th century. Archeological excavations on the island
reveal patterns of resource use and food consumption over approximately
5000 years of human habitation. My role in the project is to
develop mathematical and spatial models connecting human demographics
with observed and preserved evidence of changes in plant and
animal communities.
